What Is a Dialed Number (DN)?
A dialed number (DN) is the phone number a caller dials to reach a specific destination, such as a sales line, support queue or IVR menu. In a contact center, each DN maps to a particular campaign, skill group or routing path. When a customer calls your toll-free number, that number is the DN, and your system uses it to determine where the call should go.
Dialed number identification service (DNIS) is the technology that captures which number the caller dialed. This matters when your contact center uses multiple phone numbers for different purposes. DNIS tells your ACD and IVR which number the caller used so the system can route them to the right team and display the right scripts. Five9 supports unlimited DNs across your campaigns. You can assign different numbers to different marketing channels, geographic regions or product lines, then use DNIS data to route calls and measure which channels drive the most volume.
Why Are Dialed Numbers Important in Contact Centers?
Dialed numbers serve several operational and analytical purposes:
Call routing uses the DN to determine which IVR script, skill group or campaign queue should handle the call.
Channel attribution tracks which marketing campaigns, ads or landing pages are generating phone calls by assigning unique DNs to each source.
Script customization displays different agent scripts or greetings based on the DN the customer dialed, so a sales call gets a different experience than a support call.
Reporting and analytics break down call volume, conversion rates and service levels by DN to measure performance across campaigns and channels.
