What is On-Hook?

On-hook is a telephony term that refers to the state of a telephone or softphone when it is not actively engaged in a call. In a contact center, an on-hook status indicates that the line is idle, available, or disconnected after a completed interaction. Understanding on-hook and off-hook states is essential for monitoring agent activity, managing call flow, and ensuring accurate reporting within call handling systems.

Benefits of Monitoring On-Hook Status

Tracking on-hook status helps optimize operations and customer experience by:

  • Providing visibility into agent availability for incoming calls

  • Improving call routing accuracy and efficiency

  • Ensuring reliable reporting of call handling metrics

  • Reducing wait times by balancing workload distribution

  • Supporting better workforce and performance management
