What Is Dual Tone Multi Frequency (DTMF)?

Dual Tone Multi Frequency (DTMF) is a signaling method used in telecommunication systems where a combination of two tones is sent simultaneously to represent a digit on the telephone keypad. In a contact center, DTMF is primarily used for Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems, enabling customers to navigate automated menus by pressing numbers on their phone.

Benefits of Dual Tone Multi Frequency (DTMF)

There are several benefits to using DTMF in the contact center:

  • Improves IVR menu call routing efficiency

  • Reduces wait times with easier IVR navigation

  • Lowers operational costs

  • More accurate than voice recognition systems

  • Enhances security by protecting customer data
