This summer Five9 welcomed 14 new interns to bring exciting fresh perspectives and ideas. They have contributed to their teams in valuable ways while gaining knowledge and incredible insights from leadership. Our internship program provides just the right mix of challenges and excitement. We encourage our interns to develop new skills and connect them with leaders across multiple departments to maximize their opportunity to learn. We can’t wait to see what our interns accomplish for the rest of the summer!

To recognize our 2023 intern class, we are excited to highlight a few of them for National Intern Day on July 27th and shed some light on their experiences thus far. Welcome, Jessica Cusi, a data science intern excited to share how her experience at Five9 has helped her establish valuable connections and prepared her for a future career in conversation design.

Jessica is a graduate student at Georgetown University pursuing an M.S. in computational linguistics. She completed her undergrad at Georgetown in psychology and linguistics with a minor in French. She knew Five9 was a great company to work for after her initial interview with individuals that she admired. Her interviewers shared how they converted their backgrounds in linguistics into data science careers in the conversation design space, the same path Jess is interested in pursuing. Jessica felt incredibly understood from the moment she started the interview process, and it made her even more eager to join the team!

As a data science intern, Jessica’s research focuses on comparing how various automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems perform on different types of customer data. Her work has a big impact on Five9’s contribution to each client. She works on determining the best ASR model for specific customers and datatypes, which helps enable an accurate transcription process.

She says, “If a caller’s speech is not correctly recognized and transcribed, the proper tasks and requests to be completed by an agent or automatic system will be disrupted!” Jessica’s work is vital for a positive and seamless customer experience.

Jessica’s role as a Five9 intern this summer is actively preparing her for a future career in conversation design. She has learned how to apply research and aspects of conversation design in a professional environment. She has also been able to work with individuals from several departments, from sales to product, which helps her better understand Five9 as a whole and the role she plays in helping the company stay successful.

Jessica shared, “There hasn’t been a moment where I feel like I didn’t belong at Five9 since everyone has been extremely welcoming and helpful from day one. Whenever I’m in a meeting, my work and opinions are taken into consideration, and I’m always offered support from my team.”

Five9 values each member of the team. Our interns are given responsibility designed to help them learn and grow, and every contribution is welcomed and appreciated. Her favorite thing about the Summer Intern Program is the Intern Speaker Series. She enjoys getting to meet and hear from people across different departments in Five9. She says, “It’s interesting to see how they all work together to contribute to the company’s overall success!” Jessica values the connections she has made with current employees and the helpful tips they have shared about her role and navigating the job search process.
