What Is a Spam Call?

A spam call is any unwanted or unsolicited phone call you did not ask to receive. These calls come from telemarketers, robocallers, scammers and fraudsters who use automated dialing systems to reach thousands of numbers per hour. Some spam calls try to sell you something. Others attempt to steal personal information through social engineering or phishing.

Spam callers often use caller ID spoofing to make their number look like a local call or a trusted organization. This technique displays a fake number on your phone so you are more likely to pick up. The FTC and FCC enforce regulations like the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and the National Do Not Call Registry, but enforcement cannot keep up with the volume of illegal calls. The STIR/SHAKEN framework is a newer industry standard that authenticates caller ID information at the network level to combat spoofing.

In a contact center context, spam and spoofed calls also affect businesses. Inbound spam ties up agent time and skews reporting metrics. Five9 Intelligent CX Platform includes call screening, ANI validation and CRM integration to help contact centers identify and filter unwanted calls before they reach an agent.

How Can You Identify and Block Spam Calls?

Several methods help you recognize and reduce spam calls:

  • Do not answer calls from numbers you do not recognize, especially if the caller ID shows a number similar to yours (neighbor spoofing).

  • Register your number with the National Do Not Call Registry (donotcall.gov) to reduce legitimate telemarketing calls, though this does not stop illegal robocallers.

  • Use your phone carrier's built-in spam filtering tools. Most major carriers offer free call screening that flags or blocks suspected spam before your phone rings.

  • Report spam calls to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov. Reporting helps regulators track and shut down illegal calling operations.

  • For businesses, use contact center platforms with call screening and ANI validation to filter spam before it reaches your agents and skews your call data.
